*Ahem* as much as most would like it to be...it's not a shipping pic
Ok, before some of you Zuko fangirls start pelting me with hand granades, (HOLY CRAP, don't hurt me) on one side, I'm not trying to make fanart that unintentionally gives brain aneurisms to people who are irrititated by Song's existence (for one reason or another) XD. a fanart not really based on anything pairing wise, but mostly on the mood of that evening.
She is a character that I believe is NOT a Mary Sue. I've kinda ranted on that several times about it, (hehe ) but it's because 'romantic' implications or not (which sadly probably aren't LOL ), I think her pure sweet simplicity, and Korean influence brings something nice and her interaction with the fugitive prince is something I found unexpectedly and beautifully sincere after a while...even if I was kinda apprehensive about her in the beginining. I think even as a character on her own she works well...Or maybe it's just because she reminds me of another charming korean anime character named "Dae Jang Geum"...who knows.
And on the other side, though I <333 the notion of a potential relationship between the two, there is a unspoken, bittersweet subtlety that goes on between them which contrasts the other often heavily emotional and loud relationships Zuko has with everyone else that I wanted to capture. Not really portraying "OMG lurve" (even if I secretly want it to sometimes...when I'm hyper and insane) but that coldness and her regret and dissappointment at not perhaps being able to reach a person who is not prepared for opening up to anyone just yet.
Even if Zusong fanart has been done (better ) by others before. I couldn't stop myself from drawin it some time after I got giddy from seeing "Cave of Two Lovers" and I shamelessly LOOOOVE Joseon period Korean art brushstrokes OMG.
And fer cheezus sake, Zuko, why'd ya have to steal the dang Horstrich...? -__-;;
Edit: A special thanks to Do Kyu Yi, who was cool enough to email me his corrections on the Hangeul (Korean script). It probably still looks a bit wonky, but fortunately, it looks better than it did before.
You know, come to think of it, viewing this begs the question: Is the Earth Kingdom's ethnicity more diverse than we think?
Think about it. Throughout Season 1 you'd think that there are only "Chinese" and some "Japanese" people in the Earth Kingdom. And then in Season 2, you find two "Koreans" (Song and her mom) and an "Indian" (Guru Pathik).
So, are there other "Koreans" and "Indians" out there somewhere in the Earth Kingdom? And as a bonus question: Are there also other "ethnicities"? IDK, maybe some "Arabs"?
I kind of saw it this way, the Avatar universe is somewhat based on our own - though in Asia for the most part. It's actually pretty possible that there is an "European" part to the Avatar world, but the "Asians" simply haven't discovered the "European" side of the world yet.
If you think about it, the Fire Nation is pretty similar to Japan in shape and culture (though not necessarily clothing style); and the Earth Kingdom is pretty similar to China in the aspect that, due to its size, is made of some other ethnicities besides the Chinese. Like, Korea is connected to China, so very far northeast, the clothing and culture becomes more similar. Guru Pathik, could be "Indian" since there's the possibility that he came from "India," since from what we've seen of the Airbenders, they seem to be more "Tibetan" and Guru Pathik didn't really mention (or did he? I can't actually remember) if he traveled to the Air Temple. As for Arabs, you might recall the Sandbenders in one of the episodes before the gAang reached Ba Sing Se, and in China, there are also Muslim groups. So, yeah, you could say that the Earth Kingdom is more diverse than one immediately thinks.
So, I hope that kind of helps answer your question, and that you haven't been totally bored by the end of the second paragraph.
Yeah, I've seen the movie - definitely glad I waited until it was out on DVD to borrow it from the library. It would've been a waste of money to watch it in the theaters.
It wasn't so much confusing as it was really badly executed. Lots of bad decisions were made. For one thing, it kind of annoyed me how all the main characters (Aang, Sokka, and Katara) were played by white actors, and while everybody in the Fire Nation were played by Indians. It doesn't make much sense to me, and it's kind of egotistical of the director, too. Also, in forcing the Fire Nation to carry around fire instead of being able to make it severely weakens the Fire Nation. Sure, the director said he was trying to put everybody on a more even playing field, but that really just makes it really easy to beat the Fire Nation.
You've taken this very deep....And I realize that the image -does- portray the bitter-sweetness of their encounter. But if he had acted differently toward her...he wouldn't have been Zuko. I adore the background with the fireflies. And Song's expression makes me want to cry. She was such a sweet girl and I hope Zuko one day returns her horstrich. Or gives buys her a whole stable full of them as a thank-you.
